About the IST Web Site
The Current Phase of Development
Since December, we have been undergoing a comprehensive redesign of the College's web pages. The first step was redesigning the front page, which included the design of a new logo and identity system for the College itself. Furthermore, the front page was shortened to contain only a main menu of other pages, requiring the creation of a separate "News" page and this, "About the IST Web Site," page.
After reaching that initial stage, we updated all of the College's other web pages to the new design offline. Once they were all complete and tested, we put them all online at the same time. Now we are examining how the site is structured and how more improvements can be made. A top priority is adding a site index. We are also looking forward to making better use of advanced technologies such as custom CGI programs and Java.
Technical Stuff
The primary tool used presently is a Macintosh shareware program called PageSpinner. This allows us complete control over the HTML code, while automating many tasks such as linking and adding height and width tags. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Dimensions are used for the graphics. All production is done on MacOS computers running System 7.5 or higher. Pages are tested in Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, NCSA Mosaic, Lynx, and other browsers.
Adobe SiteMill is used for site control, including link-checking, file renaming, and directory changes. The web server is a Power Macintosh running Quarterdeck WebStar web server software.
