Computing Resource Center:
The Computing Resource Center (CRC) is staffed by a full-time director and graduate student assistants. The CRC offers the following features:
Description of Resources
Microcomputers
The CRC houses PC workstations, Apple Macintoshes, and HP9000 workstations. Although you may walk in, we suggest calling ahead and reserving a machine (reservations are restricted to current students of the College of Information Science and Technology).
An Ethernet Network connects Macintosh, PC, and UNIX workstations, and laser printers. At least one Macintosh is equipped with a color scanner. Please make advance arrangements to use these.
Online Searching
You may access online database vendors such as DIALOG, LEXIS/NEXIS, and BRS.
Online searching is available to all students currently enrolled in a class using these resources. Thesauri, database guides, and system manuals are available in the online searching area, on the east side of the Computing Resource Center.
Shared Library Cataloging
A number of courses access OCLC and RLIN, two national shared library catalog networks.
The dedicated connection to OCLC allows online searching through bibliographic and authority files containing over 81 million records. This equipment may be reserved in advance.
Internet Access
The College of Information Science and Technology (IST) encourages each student to obtain a Drexel e-mail account. An e-mail account enables IST students to communicate easily with other students and faculty and the opporunity to explore the Internet.
Student accounts on Drexel University's DUNX1 Sun system and DUVM IBM mainframe are accessible from any of the Computing Resource Center's Macintosh computers or by remote modem connection.
E-mail, UseNet NewsGroups, the World Wide Web, telnet, and FTP are all available. Two useful tools available on the Computing Resource Center's Macintosh computers are Fetch (for transferring files from other computers), and Netscape (for browsing the World Wide Web).
Microcomputer Software
The Computing Resource Center owns hundreds of Macintosh and IBM PC titles, concentrating on basic tools, information processing, programming languages, and educational software.
The PC software includes Microsoft Windows NT and the Microsoft Office suite as well as portions of the Microsoft Visual Develoment Enviornment such as Visual Basic and Visual C++. The Macintosh software includes Microsoft Office and Code Warrior 8. Additonal software required for courses is installed by the staff.
Copyright laws are strictly observed. Illegal copies of software and games are prohibited.
Reference Collections
Hundreds of monographs, reference works and indices, and many serial titles are shelved in the Reading Room (Room 109).
Books are cataloged and shelved using the Library of Congress classification system. Journals are shelved alphabetically. The reference and practice materials for cataloging and classification courses are located on the ground floor. Reserve materials are stored at the front desk.
